Snowbirds

_____________________________________

Tracks in the snow let me know where you go

Gray squirrels run in circles throughout the woods

Near feeders the three-toed hops of junco

Woodpeckers pace up and down the ironwoods

Follow the heart-shaped tracks of buck and doe

We’re all leaving tracks through the neighborhood

Winter Woods

_____________________________________

They’re wondering about the shine out there

Mourning the fall on this frosty morning

Bare gray branches are more than they can bear

Warning us winter came without warning

*

No other season questions what you know

Wait while dormant branches support snow’s weight

So strong as below acorns gray squirrels sow

Ate one, shared one, then buried the next eight

*

I know winter’s magic astounds the eye

Piece of the woods covered in snow brings peace

Sky blue birds migrate past in the blue sky

Geese in their way in the v-shape of geese

*

Right now’s so stunning makes me want to write

Site’s so lovely it really is a site

I See A Smile

                                New white hat of

In Like A Lion

_____________________________________

Calendar says spring

But it’s still snowing

A vernal foot has fallen

The flakes weigh so much

Folks complain and such

Likely praying for pollen

*

Not me though, I’m thrilled

A snowman I’ll build

Snow any time of the year

Produces such joy

Others I annoy

As I let out a loud cheer.

Sugarbush

Now we know how it feels to be

Living inside a still snow globe

With trees wearing snow like a thick robe

The winds blowing flakes all glittery

Surrounded by snow suddenly.

Snow settles in on trails knee deep

Making them soft, even the steep

The snow begins to settle down

The wind blows and shakes it around

Inside we make memories to keep.

Whiteface

_____________________________________

Friends and family, destination Whiteface

For an extended adventure weekend

Squeezed in a glass gondola we ascend

Then we descend on boards and skis with grace

*

Between snow and board Julie found space

Frozen faces, tired legs, hours we spend

Yard sales, bumps, winds, and laughs we descend.

At the summit looks like another place.

*

Despite the noise from the front of the car

We made it down the longest eastern blue

And had a delicious locker room lunch

From open to close we really rode far

We had so much fun the time really flew

It was a great day with a great bunch.

Snow Day

__________________________________

To work I am nonessential

Doesn’t matter my credential

So I get the day off to play

When they close for a snow day

I’ll admit that’s just fine with me

Hunkered at home is where I’ll be.

*

It’s okay I’m not essential

Mainly when weather’s torrential

I’ll do my best to stay away

And try to hide my great dismay

Keeping calm seems to be the key

To hiding my snow day glee.

*

In this free day there’s potential

Found time the most consequential

Though in my home I will stay

I’ll get to work without delay

Staying as busy as a bee

As if I’m my own employee

*

At home I am influential

Time spent is experiential

While I believe play’s my forte

Sometimes the chores outweigh

So I stay here rather than flee

And get the work done around me.

*

No this is not preferential

Nor is it inconsequential

To spend my free day in this way

From my to-do list I don’t stray

But before too long I will flee

To the mountains or woods for glee

*

It’s okay I’m nonessential

About that I shout hooray

I’ll enjoy it I’ll guarantee
