Burnt Sienna

_____________________________________

A new box of crayons waxy points undented

Deep in my mind the fragrance is cemented

It’s wasn’t until I saw a bald cypress tree in fall

That I had any idea what burnt sienna was at all

Detours out of thick black lines once lamented

In reality my vocabulary augmented

*

My world is colored by crayolas pigmented

Names partnered with hues gave me the wherewithal

To precisely describe my world big and small

Into my memory these colors are cemented.

Picea omorika

_____________________________________

Who says these trees are evergreen?

Do the other shades go unseen?

This is the problem with labels.

*

Each month new tones come to the scene.

There are so many more than green.

This is the problem with labels.

*

Chartreuse, emerald, forest, citrine

Gold, crimson, coral, tangerine

This is the problem with labels.

*

Traits label omits is obscene

Trees so much more than evergreen

This is the problem with labels

Spring Daze

_____________________________________

The dogwood blooms in early May

Old leaves decay

Soft bees take flight

There’s more sunlight

*

New spring is dressed in subtle hues

Soft pinks, pale blues

Enhancing fast

As months go past

*

With rapid speed the colors shift

The change is swift

From pale to bright

With growing light.

Seeing Red

_____________________________________

I explore the warm conservatory

With the goal of finding the color red

Scanning canopy and understory

Looking in containers and planting beds

Miss no detail below or overhead

This quick scavenger hunt opened my eyes

To wonders I may have missed otherwise

Can’t wait to go back and explore again

Looking closely to see the next surprise

It is not a matter of if but when.
