We will honor the family who gave it

We will not allow eminent domain

An open space this garden shall remain

There’s a garden to save and we’ll save it.

We’re not prone to fighting but we’ll brave it.

There must be another space for new fields

From demolition this place we will shield

There’s a garden to save and we’ll save it.

Oh no! We will not let you pave it.

This too is a place for children learning

The school board’s proposal we are spurning

There’s a garden to save and we’ll save it.

We will honor the family who gave it

There’s a garden to save and we’ll save it.

Angel Food Cake

_____________________________________

Oh yes I baked a cake today

And yes the eggs my hens did lay

There’s lots of sugar don’t panic

It’s good for you it’s organic!

Some lime for flavor botanic

So tasty you’ll think me satanic

Please here have a slice gigantic

There is no need to get manic

Don’t worry about what you’ll weigh

Enjoy this sweetness in your day.

Picea omorika

Who says these trees are evergreen?

Do the other shades go unseen?

This is the problem with labels.

*

Each month new tones come to the scene.

There are so many more than green.

This is the problem with labels.

*

Chartreuse, emerald, forest, citrine

Gold, crimson, coral, tangerine

This is the problem with labels.

*

Traits label omits is obscene

Trees so much more than evergreen

This is the problem with labels

Iron Lace

_____________________________________

Curved neck I gaze up to the cloudy sky

Through lacy gazebo roof most ornate

Dark black wrought iron perforates

The leaden expectant clouds floating by

Their cargo drops, I am no longer dry

A blurry liquid world the rain creates

Dull hues brighten as it precipitates

Best find cover, thunder rumbles nearby

Connotation

(Inspired by Pensive or Thoughtful Mood a 1939 sculpture by Stella Elkins Tyler)

_____________________________________

Rubenesque a negative

Willowy a positive

Zaftig to avoid

Slender to attain

Chubby a dislike

Skinny a desire

Stout to loathe

Svelte to long

Why do these words dictate decisions and self-worth

When they say nothing about inner beauty and character?

Do I?

What happens when the glass is broken?

What happens when the glass is broken?

Do alarms sound with the shards hitting the floor?

Do alarms sound with the shards hitting the floor?

When the alarm is broken, what happens?

Do the glass shards sound hitting the floor?

Antique ancient vintage alert system

Antique ancient vintage alert system

Speaks to bygone days before digital whistles and whines

Speaks to bygone days before digital whistles and whines

Ancient, antique, vintage system speaks to before

Digital whistles and whines alert to bygone days.

*

There is only one way to find out what will happen.

There is only one way to find out what will happen.

Eyes squinting, shoulders hunched, body flinching, hands raised, do I do it?

Eyes squinting, shoulders hunched, body flinching, hands raised, do I do it?

Shoulders, eyes, hands, body find out what will happen

There is only one way I do it – flinching, squinting, raised, hunched.

*

Shoulders hunched – to the ancient bygone days

Eyes squinting – the antique shards hitting the floor

Body flinching – when the broken glass sound happens

Hands raised – before vintage alert system

Alarm speaks – digital whines and whistles, there is only one way

Find out what will happen, when I do it. What to do?

Mid-Term Primary

_____________________________________

Sisters before me fought for the right

Not all that many years ago

Empowering us with legal might

I’m not willing to forgo

Mid-term, special, general or primary

If there’s a ballot to be cast I’ll cast one

Even when all of the options are scary

I’ll keep voting til my breath is the last one

*

Some say it’s a duty, that you’re morally bound

I understand it’s a choice

For some it’s an inconvenient run-around

For me, the quietest way to raise my voice

“Every vote counts” some people scoff, well I believe that it’s true

Some believe the candidate is pulling a fast one

But with my polling station I have a rendezvous

I’ll keep voting til my breath is the last one.

(Inspired by) Sunset by Stella Elkins Tyler 1938

_____________________________________

Just out of bed she receives some bad news

Devastated she collapses wholly

Deflated she takes the shape of her chair

Sinking deeply until she disappears

*

Slowly she inflates breathing in deeply

Emerging from the cracks of the cushions

Spine strengthening heart hardening, healing

Soul searching, not looking for answers.

*

Answers will not change what is the present

Without questions and without answers she

Pulls herself up into her new today

Moving her breath through her new body

*

It’s the best she can do, breathe in, breathe out

Emerging, strengthening, moving, healing.
