Pause

_____________________________________

On my morning commute

I stopped at the sign

Fleeting moments captured

*

Just like every damn day

But today was different

Translucent, transcendent

*

Just like every damn day

The sky was bright, so was the sign

Seconds stalled to permanence

*

As the frost slipped down

Revealing alarming red

Temporary forever

Snowbirds

_____________________________________

Tracks in the snow let me know where you go

Gray squirrels run in circles throughout the woods

Near feeders the three-toed hops of junco

Woodpeckers pace up and down the ironwoods

Follow the heart-shaped tracks of buck and doe

We’re all leaving tracks through the neighborhood

Winter Woods

_____________________________________

They’re wondering about the shine out there

Mourning the fall on this frosty morning

Bare gray branches are more than they can bear

Warning us winter came without warning

*

No other season questions what you know

Wait while dormant branches support snow’s weight

So strong as below acorns gray squirrels sow

Ate one, shared one, then buried the next eight

*

I know winter’s magic astounds the eye

Piece of the woods covered in snow brings peace

Sky blue birds migrate past in the blue sky

Geese in their way in the v-shape of geese

*

Right now’s so stunning makes me want to write

Site’s so lovely it really is a site

Like the pine needles

Quieting every footstep

On the asphalt path

*

A long walk outside

Quiets the noise in my mind

In only moments

*

Needled evergreens

Buffer the sounds of the road

The park is peaceful

*

Gone from the office

Far from the water cooler

And daily grumbles

*

A needed lunchtime escape

Prepared for the afternoon

“The woods is shining this morning

Red, gold and green, the leaves

Lie on the ground, or fall

Or hang full of light in the air still.”

~ from “Grace” by Wendell Berry

——————————————————–

The woods is shining this morning

A little bit less from above

A little bit more from below

First hard frost causing the inversion

*

Red, gold, and green the leaves

Have finally fallen carpeting

The lawn and last year’s leaves

The gold standing out, gleaming

*

Lie on the ground, or fall

Into the soft piles of leaves

Surrounded by colors, engulfed

By the scent of transition

*

Or hang full of light in the air still

From branches you’ve climbed to see

The leaves from afar, like you could

When they clung to the canopy

Election Day

_____________________________________

Millions cannot be led astray

Try not to be disenchanted

Choice of evil

*

I will do more than hope and pray

Sticking up for the transplanted

Avoid the vile

*

Taking action without delay

Bringing to light words so slanted

Lifting the veil

*

Freedom to cast my vote today

I will take nothing for granted

The way I live

Everyday I’m Shufflin’

_____________________________________

Did anyone notice the line

In the leaves as they shuffled through

Amazed at what water can do

As it cascades from the roofline

Nature’s artwork so sublime

Only for temporary view

Until new weather does ensue

A new masterpiece reflects time

Burning Bush

_____________________________________

The short attention spans

Of each and Everyman

Have to be the reason

This plant is liked at all

Enthralling just in fall

And no other season

Truly, barely pleasin’

I will blame who I can

The short attention spans

Of each and Everyman
