Picea omorika

_____________________________________

Who says these trees are evergreen?

Do the other shades go unseen?

This is the problem with labels.

*

Each month new tones come to the scene.

There are so many more than green.

This is the problem with labels.

*

Chartreuse, emerald, forest, citrine

Gold, crimson, coral, tangerine

This is the problem with labels.

*

Traits label omits is obscene

Trees so much more than evergreen

This is the problem with labels

Making New Trees

_____________________________________

Chartreuse catkins sway in the breeze

Waiting for a wind gust

The strategy of many trees

Avoiding need for lust

Dingle dangle through them wind flows

Pollen moving as the breeze blows

Dingle dangle

Dingle dangle

Where it may go nobody knows

*

Chartreuse catkins sway in the breeze

Pollen blowing around

No need for the efforts of bees

Set far above the ground

Swinging swaying dust releases

Gathers in corners and creases

Swinging swaying

Swinging swaying

With each gust the chance increases

*

Chartreuse catkins sway in the breeze

Causing irritation

Triggering in others a sneeze

And exasperation

Flutter quiver from way up high

Pollen clouds where songbirds fly

Flutter quiver

Flutter quiver

Creating new catkin supply.

The Katsura Tree

_____________________________________

Heart shaped leaves of my favorite tree

Tinged with red, newly appear

Destined to be fall debris

Dusting the ground in yellow cheer

Graces our noses with scent of sugar cookie

Scintillating throughout the year.

Aesculus

_____________________________________

Leaves are crinkled, wrinkled, wrapped up tight

Their unfurling is a sight

Watching with delight

All is right

Grow

*

Round clustered buds open to pure white

Panicles rise to new heights

Watching with delight

All is right

Show

*

Have better things to do I might

But I could stay here all night

Watching with delight

All is right

Know

April Tulip

_____________________________________

The day April showers bring May flowers

What do those showers do for the April blooms?

Whether gentle or hard, minutes or hours

They create blossoms to brighten the gloom

Bringing in the new season with perfume.

Colorful flowers bedazzled with drops

Rather than slicker it’s a rain costume

Embellished with jewels from bottom to top.

So it seems that these spring thundershowers

Accessorize but don’t over power.

Pasque Flower

_____________________________________

Soft purple flowers detract

From the gloomy gray

Of a spring yet to arrive

To push cold away.

*

Perhaps the reason

For this bright floral drama

Is to fool seasons.

Crocus

_____________________________________

Up through old brown crunchy leaves

Emerges a bloom of gold

Up through old brown crunchy leaves

*

Undeterred that it’s still cold

A small island of beauty

Emerges a bloom of gold

*

Petite bloom is a cutie

Nectar and pollen for bees

A small island of beauty

*

Glinting far beneath the trees

A bright harbinger of spring

Nectar and pollen for bees

*

Unwary of what spring will bring

First of many on the way

A bright harbinger of spring.

*

Petals open in the day

Up through old brown crunchy leaves

First of many on the way

Up through old brown crunchy leaves.

Beauty Comes from All Angles

_____________________________________

We

Need to

Focus on

Admiring

The backs of flowers

Delighting in beauty

From every single angle

Exploring glory tucked away

As well as the grace sent skyward

Slyly distracting from all the splendor.
