Vicious Cycle

_____________________________________

This hamster wheel of steel needs attention

A look at the exhaust and suspension

Though I look under with apprehension

My goal is always breakdown prevention

This machine ensures my place in the race

That rat race I cannot fully embrace

Figuring out how to withdraw with grace

As I find the parts I need to replace

This great car gets me where I need to go

Through traffic and downpours and blowing snow

I know it will get me there tomorrow

I need the car to get to work, it’s true

I need to work to get the car, I knew

But it also lets me do what I want to do.

Splitting Thoughts

_____________________________________

Here the dark dead cells of the tree are the strongest

It is no coincidence it is called heartwood

Tough while the softness around it is peeled apart

Many times the heartwood does not last the longest

Silently rotting leaving a void where strength once stood

Invisibly weakened by life, so goes the heart

Mid-life Career Change

_____________________________________

I’d like to drive a race car

Earn a living driving fast

Drive fast today and I might

Pay speeding tickets

**********************************

I’ve always had a lead foot

Here’s a way to make money

Making a living and I

Don’t have to slow down

**********************************

The environmentalist

In me knows this is a waste

But my inner speed demon

Wants to race a car

Happily Never After

_____________________________________

Reflecting on the dreams of many years ago

When we were young and still evolving

Love was uncomplicated, life was slow

Around ourselves the world was revolving

As we grew our relationship was dissolving

I know who I am now, what I treasure

And having this new life is a pleasure.

Dear Sis

_____________________________________

How is it that though

You’re 13 months younger than me

You seem to know

So much more, you’re worldly and savvy

Street smart, wise

Oh the life in those eyes.

It was I who jumped in to your bed

When it was thunder storming

And me you comforted

While visiting people in mourning.

I don’t think twice when

Something’s amiss

To seek your advice

I value dear sis.

According to the order of our birth

I should be the sage

But that concept has no worth

Wisdom has nothing to do with age.

I worry that your knowledge

Comes from life experiences hard fought

You didn’t learn all this in college

But the lessons hard blows of life taught.

I’m grateful for your comfort

And always sound direction

I consider you an expert

And wish I could offer you protection.

I love you little sis

And thank you for the shoulder

Though something feels amiss

Like you should be the older.

In Memory of Grandma

_____________________________________

Grandma liked men best, flirting without shame

Talking to each one as if he’s her next flame

Grandma liked cowboys in really tight jeans

In each rodeo she found the man of her dreams.

She read romance novels from cover to cover

As soon as one’s finished she picked up another.

*

She had a sly smile that went up on one side

And a sense of humor she tried to hide

But one look at the comics she taped to her fridge

Told you a lot about the humor she hid

Sending us cards for every special occasion

With neat handwriting in green felt-tipped pen

*

Grandma had a magical green thumb

Just name a plant, she could grow every one

Enormous Christmas cactus, blooming bright red

African violets with special lights overhead

Strawberries and veggies she didn’t even eat

For any plant, grandma’s house couldn’t be beat.

*

More than just plants, she raised a strong daughter too

Who always does the right thing to do

Who’s caring and thoughtful and kind to all creatures

Who’s influence from grandma is more than her features

Though we will miss grandma, her legacy lives on

In the caring strength and beauty of our mom.

Lesson Learned

_____________________________________

Did you know you can feel your heart break?

I learned that two short years ago today.

It is more than a twinge or a cramp or an ache

I was fearful it would not go away.

Turns out some time will mend a heartbreak

Though I feel the scars remain to this day.

It’s a good lesson to know what’s at stake

If you find you have someone’s heart someday.

There’s lessons in trauma, make no mistake

The worth of this is crucial to convey.

Bleeding Heart

_____________________________________

Over the phone I learned the news

Because face-to-face you couldn’t bear

And so a coward’s way you choose

A funny way of showing care.

I actually felt my heart tear

Suddenly lost and all alone

Life became defined by despair

All because you have no backbone.
